NIH-RTP Master Plan
A campus Master Plan focused on improving utilization, addressing emerging and projected research needs, and adding a clinical research center and visitor center.

377 acres, over 1 million sf.
The NIH facility in North Carolina consists of nine buildings on campus and several leased facilities in the area. The Master Plan for NIH-RTP was commissioned in response to institutional policy, to evaluate the space needs and facilities at RTP, to support the research functions and to seek parity among the NIH groups. Two other factors also drove the request: space pressure on the campus (both recent and anticipated) caused by the evolving nature of research and the growth; and planned new buildings and their integration into the campus, including a clinical research center and visitor center. The vision for the Master Plan has five main objectives: to create a lively and vibrant campus community, ensure the facilities meet the scientific needs of NIH, provide employees with amenities and on-campus services, facilitate community interaction and outreach, and create a sustainable, environmentally friendly campus. An accompanying Environmental Assessment was also developed.
